Climate Advisers - a respected research and public policy group dedicated to strengthening climate action in the United States and around the world - seeks a Director of Forest Legality to join our growing team. The Director will lead a five-person, multi-year "Strategic Litigation" project to convince U.S. law enforcement agencies to prosecute violations in key developing nations of generally applicable U.S. Criminal laws such as Federal statutes against wire fraud, corruption, tax evasion, money laundering and other white-collar crimes. This position will report to Climate Advisers' Head of Programs, and is based in Washington, DC. Applicantsshould be authorized to work in the US without restrictions.

The Project

Climate Advisers Strategic Litigation project aims to secure U.S. prosecution of white collar forest sector crimes occurring in key developing nations, focusing initially on Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. Many existing U.S. criminal laws have considerable reach and power beyond U.S. borders provided that some substantial U.S. connection exists to the underlying wrongful action.

The ultimate goal of the project is to convince U.S. prosecutors to bring forest crime cases, based on carefully constructed criminal referrals prepared by the Climate Advisers team and partner organizations. Getting there will involve working with partners and sub-grantees on the ground in priority countries to train and build capacity for local NGOs to investigate and document violations of U.S. law in a small handful of test cases.


  • Provide thought leadership and determine overall strategies for the Strategic Litigation project.
  • Serve as the external leader and spokesperson for the project before all key audiences and stakeholders, including policy makers, investigators, regulators, investors, law enforcement, NGO leadership and the media.
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts through development of proposals, concept notes, and relationships with funders.
  • Establish and manage relationships with local NGOs.
  • Convene all project-related meetings, trainings, and workshops.
  • Provide day-to-day project management oversight on budgets, deadlines, and deliverables for the project.
  • Oversee lawyers, consultants, and sub-grantees/partners.
  • Liaise with the Head of Programs and Grant Manager on grant reporting.

Professional Qualifications

  • A J.D. or other graduate degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • 8-10 years of professional experience, with at least 3-5 years working directly on forest legality and governance issues in developing countries.
  • Proven track record of leadership skills.
  • Experience managing small teams.
  • In-country NGO or civil society experience in the key countries where this project operates.
  • Background in forest policy, knowledge of rule of law/governance and legal expertise.
  • Prior experience and language skills relevant to Indonesia and/or Latin America.
